Osborn School’s Fifth-grade year is one filled with excitement and exploration. Children are exposed to a variety of learning experiences both in and out of the classroom. Teachers strive to help each child realize his or her unique strengths and personalities. Our goal is to cultivate independence and promote critical thinking in a collaborative and constructive environment that fosters lifelong learners.  Children take an active part in preparing for the transition to middle school and, in the process, celebrate the culmination of their elementary school years.

Math

The goal of our mathematics program is to help students develop a conceptual understanding of number sense — understanding what numbers mean, how they relate to one another, and how they can be represented in many ways. There is an emphasis on skills as well as scaffolded problem-solving.  Students work independently, in groups, using manipulatives and technology to achieve success.  

Reading and Writing

Students will be immersed in the workshop model for both reading and writing. In reading, teachers use high-interest literature to engage students in learning through guided practice, conferencing, and independent reading. Specific skill instruction includes vocabulary development, decoding strategies, comprehension, research, and study skills. Our goal is to foster a love of reading.

Whether through expository writing, research reports, creative stories, poetry, or journal writing, students learn the joy and importance of skillfully communicating their ideas to others. Regular instruction in writing mechanics and editing skills supports this process.

Science

Students are involved in an inquiry-based science program that encourages children to explore the areas of chemical interactions, the cellular world, the human body, and basic earth science. They are given many opportunities to observe, question, investigate and record their findings through experiments, videos, and in-class presentations by scientists.

Social Studies

Students will investigate the Western Hemisphere and understand the impact that history has on our current global environment.  The areas of focus include geography, exploration, comparative government and economics, cultural diversity, and interdependence.

Fifth grade is a unique year that includes special experiences such as field trips, a Broadway play, a 5th-grade musical, kindergarten buddies, ballroom dance, and cultural learning experiences. Students and their families celebrate their accomplishments at the Moving Up Ceremony.
